- Germany decided in 2011 to phase out nuclear power by 2022, aiming to make economy predominantly dependent on renewable sources (primarily wind & solar).
- Result has been higher domestic energy bills, burning of more coal to meet its energy needs + increased reliance on imports of Russian gas.
- These results = bad for growth (high energy bills), bad in the short-term for the environment (burning more coal) and bad vis-a-vis geopolitics (dependence on Russia) and is regarded as Angela Merkel's biggest domestic mistake.
