- World's first global study (by American Association for Advancement of Science) says in 2010, the equivalent of 5 grocery bags filled with plastic waste entered the world's oceans for every foot of coastline (something like 8 million tonnes in total).
- Middle and low-income countries, especially in Asia, are the worst offenders (28% of total from China, 10% from Indonesia).
- Expected that tonnage will double by 2025.
