Why did Syria become fragile & Lebanon remain stable?

  • Before Syria's civil war began in 2011, the country's apparent stability concealed deep structural vulnerabilities.
  • It's top-down, Soviet style, undiversified economy, centralised government + no experience of recovering from turmoil made it vulnerable.
  • Conversely, years of civil war in Lebanon have made it more resilient, giving it a decentralised state, balanced sectarian power sharing and a free market economy, the cocktail of which is keeping it relatively stable.
